ICE Event
Bar Debate: "20th Century Engineering Experience is No Longer Relevant"

Tuesday 24th February 2015

On February 24, 2015 ICE New York held another successful bar debate on the motion “20th Century Engineering Experience is No Longer Relevant”. Speaking For the motion were Louise O’Neill of Arup and Jessica Galbo of HDR, against were Scott Maul of AECOM and Ed Plotkin, Consultant. This was the first bar debate broadcast over the internet to all ICE members in the Americas and around a dozen joined to supplement the 40 or so in the bar.

David Caiden moderated again and explained the rules and voting and in particular reminded the audience that the winner is determined based on the vote after compared to the vote before – i.e. the winner is the team that could swing the most voters by the quality of their debate. The presenters made compelling arguments and a lively debate took place including questions posed by those watching over the internet. The proponents of the motion were deemed the winners. They received the minority of votes but managed to persuade more to join them. Congratulations to all who took part.
